The 7th International Conference of Predynastic and Early Dynastic Studies marks the continuation of the previous successful conferences which happens every three years: Kraków (2002), Toulouse (2005), London (2008), New York (2011), Cairo (2014) and Vienna (2017). This five-day international event will gather in Paris a network of scholars from different countries. Leading experts in the field, together with young scholars, will present and discuss their respective research relating a significant range of themes within the broader subject of the origins of the Egyptian State (from the Predynastic period to the beginning of the Old Kingdom). The 7th International conference marks a new stage in the momentum acquired by Predynastic and Early Dynastic studies.
As in the previous meetings, Origins7-Paris aims to provide a forum to bring together the latest studies of Predynastic and Early Dynastic studies from a wide range of perspectives, based on field discoveries, material analyses, theoretical considerations, etc. Topics developed during the colloquium concern all aspects of Predynastic and Early Dynastic Egypt. Papers and posters will be organised around the following themes:
-
Absolute, relative and historical chronologies
-
Craft specialisation, technology and material culture
-
Cult, ideology and social complexity
-
Deserts-Nile Valley interactions
-
Early writing and texts
-
Egypt and its neighbours (Levant, Nubia, Sahara)
-
Results of recent fieldwork
-
Urbanism
-
Upper-Lower Egypt interactions
The conference will be hosted by the University Paris-Sorbonne at the auditorium of the Institut national d'histoire de l'art, 2 rue Vivienne, Paris 2e arrondissement.
